Poppies project blooming under way!
ABOVE: This impressive art installation is expected to stand more than 3m high and 16m long. It will be a strong reminder of the importance to remember the service and sacrifice of our servicemen and women. It will be taken on a road tour of the State.
Handmade poppies are being made across Queensland as part of a statewide public art project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that led to the end of World War I.
From Friday, 10 August, to Sunday, 19 August, at Ekka, in the Government Precinct, there will be a free public workshop for all Ekka-goers to make their own poppy to contribute to the installation.
The project aims to collect 57,705 poppies, reflecting the same number of Queensland soldiers who enlisted in World War I between 1914 and 1918.
The final artwork will spell the word “REMEMBER” and be 3m high and 16m in length.
The public art piece will be on display in Brisbane for Remembrance Day, 11 November.
The project is being put together by the Anzac Centenary Co-ordination Unit.
